As the needs of our members change over time, HMSA offers a variety of health plans to accommodate the wide range of their circumstances, financial resources, and health care needs.

Last year, HMSA health plans provided access to health care, service and support for 690,000 people. The greatest number of HMSA members comes from our employer groups. In 2009, 15,600 employer groups provided coverage for 527,500 members. More than 398,500 employees were in one of HMSA’s free choice plans and 131,100 were in HMO plans.

In 2009, 55,000 members were covered by an HMSA plan for people who were not eligible for coverage through employer group plans. Last year, HMSA individual plans provided coverage for 36,500 senior citizens, 2,700 students, 2,400 children, and 13,400 self-employed members.

In our 15th year of participation in the statewide Hawaii QUEST program, a managed care program for Medicaid beneficiaries, 106,400 HMSA members were covered under The HMSA Plan for QUEST Members.

Most of our members also receive supplemental benefits through HMSA health plan riders. In 2009, 511,700 members were enrolled in a prescription drug rider, 411,300 in a vision rider, 73,500 in a chiropractic rider, and 4,400 in a complementary care rider for alternative health services. In addition, more than 200,000 members received dental coverage through our preferred provider dental plan and HMO dental network.

HMSA also contracts with self-insured employer groups to process claims. Through these arrangements, HMSA paid 2.9 million claims in 2009, totaling $425 million in benefits for 158,800 members.
