Do we have control over our health as we grow older? What changes occur in our muscles,
bones, heart and senses as we age? These and other questions will be answered this
month in a new program called Engaging in Aging. The program consists of three two-hour
sessions, and it begins on Kauai on Oct. 24 and 25.
Sessions will be held once a week for three consecutive weeks at the HMSA Kauai
Branch Office at 4366 Kukui Grove, Suite 207, in Lihue. Classes are scheduled for
Tuesdays or Wednesdays, and morning or evening sessions are available as follows:
- Tuesdays – Oct. 24 and 31, and Nov. 7, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
- Wednesdays – Oct. 25 and Nov. 1 and 8, from 9 to 11 a.m.
Classes are open to HMSA members and the general public. Members may attend Engaging
in Aging at no cost. Non-members may participate for $35, plus tax, as space permits.
Registration is required, and seats will be granted on a first-come, first-served
basis. To register, please call HMSA Customer Service on Oahu at 1 (800) 525-6548.
Each two-hour class focuses on different topics, including:
-
Physical Changes in Aging: Participants will learn about natural aging processes
and how lifestyle choices may help slow down some of those changes.
-
Let’s Get Active: Participants will learn the importance of physical activity
in maintaining overall health. The class includes exercises for endurance, strength,
flexibility and balance.
-
Understanding Our Senses and Cognitive Ability: Participants will learn about changes
to their senses and memory, and how a positive outlook influences health.
Engaging in Aging is proudly presented by HMSA, and is intended for adults 40 years
and older. The goal is to help older adults understand that positive lifestyle changes
can enhance the aging process and make a real difference in one’s quality
of life.
HMSA is a nonprofit, mutual benefit association. It was founded in Hawaii in 1938,
and is an independent licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association. Nationally,
