Falls are a significant health risk factor for older adults. Normal physical abilities
help us maintain our balance, but they begin to decline in some adults as early
as age 30. This puts people at risk for injury due to falling. What can be done
about it? The first step is awareness and proper education.
The Hawaii Medical Service Association (HMSA) has a new health education program
called Strong, Straight and Steady. The fall prevention program consists of three
two-hour sessions, and this month it comes to Kona. Participants may select classes
on Wednesdays or Thursdays, and all sessions are held at the HMSA Kona Branch Office,
75-1029 Henry St., Suite 301, Kailua-Kona.
The HMSA program is intended for adults 40 years and older, and offers an in-depth
look at strategies and exercises to help reduce the risk of falls. The program will
help participants:
- Identify external and internal factors that increase the risk of falls.
- Understand the components of balance.
- Assess their own balance and posture.
- Practice various exercises to improve stability and mobility.
Sessions will be held once a week for three consecutive weeks. Participants have
a choice of morning or evening classes. Sessions will be held as follows:
- Wednesdays – Nov. 15 and 29 and Dec. 6, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
- Thursdays – Nov. 16 and 30 and Dec. 7, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.
HMSA members may attend the sessions at no cost. Non-members may participate for
$35, plus tax, as space permits. Registration is required, and seats will be granted
on a first-come, first-served basis. To register, please call HMSA Customer Service
on Oahu at 1 (800) 525-6548.
HMSA is an independent licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association.
