Waianae High School captures "Best of Show" at 2010 HMSA Teen Video Awards

At last night’s red-carpet award ceremony, a team of students from Waianae
High School took “Best of Show” honors at the 2010 HMSA Teen Video Awards.
The annual statewide competition encourages teens to create compelling video messages
about the dangers of substance abuse and the importance of living a healthy life.
This year, 157 videos were submitted by students from public and independent middle
schools and high schools. At last night’s ceremony at Consolidated Ward Theatre,
the top 68 public service announcements (PSAs) premiered and the very best were
honored:
- Best of Show PSA & Best Drug-Free PSA – “Meth Will
Kill You,” Waianae High School (students: Brook Acuna, Josh Alcantra, Betty
Esene, Cody Kau, Jordan Wu; teacher: John Allen III).
- Best Social Health PSA – “No Second Chance,”
Leilehua High School (students: Aiyana Brinson, Johanna Macedon, Sara Scoville;
teacher: Deena Yoneda).
- Best Underage Drinking Prevention PSA – “Minors & Drinking
Don’t Attract,” Kapaa High School (student: Duke Wellington; teacher:
Michelle Rundbaken).
- Best Tobacco-Free PSA – “Acting Big,” Kapolei
High School (students: Blake Abes, Rogerio Espino, Amanda Hipolito, Emily Parsons,
Joshua Saludez; teacher: Daryl Madela).
- Best Fitness/Nutrition PSA – “Apple vs PC,” Home
School - Kauai (student: Gabriel Abrams; teacher: Meryl Abrams).
- Special Hawaii Meth Project Award – “Crystal Mirror,”
Waianae High School (students: Tracy Ann Humann, Gladys Hannah Ibana, Shanese Johns-Talalotu,
Heidi Neidhardt, Melody Rigney, Kalin Sandobal; teacher: Michael Oconnor).
First-place winners in each category received $1,000 for video equipment or software
for their schools. Second- and third-place winners received $500 and $250, respectively.
The “Best of Show” winner received an additional $1,000. As further
recognition, top PSAs will be aired on a variety of local TV channels.
Last night’s event was attended by teachers, students and family members from
across the state, as well as V.I.P. guests and celebrity presenters. This year’s
presenters included radio personalities KC & Taka, television sports anchor John
Veneri, morning talk show host Lina Girl, television host Chris Latronic, and University
of Hawaii sport stars Inoke Funaki and Kanoe Kamanao-Kaaihue.
Sponsors of the event include HMSA, Department of Education, and Mothers Against
Drunk Driving Hawaii. Special recognition goes to the Hawaii Meth Project for their
collaborative support.
