HMSA welcomes three new board members

The Hawaii Medical Service Association (HMSA) today announced the election of Claire
Asam, Robert Harrison and Kathryn Matayoshi to its community board of directors
for three-year terms.
Asam is a trustee of the Queen Liliuokalani Trust. She was appointed by the State
of Hawaii Probate Court to her current position in 2007. She was president and executive
director of the Queen Liliuokalani Children’s Center from 1999 to 2007. Asam serves
on the boards of Asian-Pacific Islander Youth Violence Prevention, Hawaii Community
Foundation, Hookakoo Corporation, Imi Hale, and University of Hawaii Center for
Hawaiian Studies. She earned a doctorate in education at the University of Hawaii
at Manoa in 1999.
Harrison is president and chief operating officer of First Hawaiian Bank. He has
been with the bank since 1996. Harrison serves on several boards, including Aloha
Harvest, Hawaii Community Reinvestment Corporation, Maryknoll School, Roman Catholic
Diocese of Honolulu, and the Blood Bank of Hawaii. He earned a Master of Business
Administration degree at Cornell University, and served in the United States Navy
from 1980 to 1983.
Matayoshi is interim superintendent of the Hawaii State Department of Education.
She was appointed to her current position on Jan. 8, 2010. She served as deputy
superintendent since July 2009. She is an attorney and former director of the state
Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs. Matayoshi serves on the boards of Aloha
United Way and Pacific Resources for Education and Learning. She is also a charter
member of the Hawaii P-20 Council. Matayoshi earned a Juris Doctor degree from the
University of California, Hastings College of the Law, and a bachelor’s degree from
Carleton College.
The HMSA community board is comprised of 27 directors who are not compensated for
their service. Board members serve staggered three-year terms and include representatives
from health care, business, labor, government, education, clergy, and the community
at large. HMSA is an independent licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association.
